A Little Backstory on the Paint…
Last year my therapist suggested that I find a hobby outside of creating my art—which already consumes most of my life. Naturally, I decided to start making paint.
I remembered one of my high school art teachers making their own paints, and I’d always been fascinated by the process, so I started experimenting. After a LOT of trial and error, and one particularly impressive explosion of red pigment powder that left my cat Tink with pink paws for about a month, I was hooked.
These days I make small batches of watercolor and gouache by hand, experimenting with everything from earthy, traditional pigments to modern artist colors, and ethically sourced micas. I’ve also fallen down the rabbit hole of the strange and fascinating histories behind different pigments. For example, historic Indian yellow was reportedly made from the urine of cows fed a diet of mango leaves. (Yes, you read that correctly.)
Every set is mixed, made and assembled by me here in Northeast Florida. When you buy one, you’re supporting an actual artist making paint in very small batches—occasionally under the supervision of a cat who now knows to stay away from the red pigment.
